So I picked up this Bosch 3322 which is a PF454 equivalent. The PF454 is supposed to be identical to the PF25 except for length. Turns out the diameter of the Bosch (and I assume PF454) is slightly smaller than the PF25 I previously used. I saw that before installing but figured there’s enough mating surface on the housing for the seal to work anyway. Now I’m having second thoughts. The tip of the arrow in the pic points to the housing surface area that was previously filled up by the old PF25.
Anyone have similar experience or input on whether this’ll be OK to use?

Reason: Clarity
The PF25 is 4.338" tall.
The PF454 is 3.306" tall.
If you want to use a better filter, both filters are available from WIX, which is a better filter than the AC filter. Part numbers are 51069 and 57099 respectively, which is the same as the NAPA "Gold" filters (which are actually the WIX filters) sold under NAPA part numbers FIL 1069 and FIL 7099 respectively. These WIX filters are all 21 micron filters.
The PF1218 is actually 5.178" tall.
The PF25 is the filter that most people would recognize as a "stock" size filter for a small block. The "shorty" PF454 is often used if there are header clearance issues that need a shorter filter.

A larger i.e. longer filter should never be an issue more filter area is a good thing.
I would agree that longer is better unless the bottom of the filter gets cooked by the exhaust. One of the functions of oil is cooling. Better to use a shorter filter that maintains a few inches clearance than increase filter area at the expense of higher oil temps.
I don't know about the replacements. The gen. AC Delco filters are not expensive and always fit and seal. So after 50 plus years of Chevrolet ownership. I just use the gen. AC Delco filters. They really are cost effective and definitely as good as OEM!
Thanks guys. I was concerned about the diameter (not length), so I rolled the dice and swapped it for a PF25 clone which ended up having the right diameter. I guess the takeaway here is either the PF454 doesn’t actually have the same diameter as the PF25, or this particular Bosch PF454 clone I used (#3322) is incorrectly listed as having the same diameter as a PF454.
BTW actual AC Delco filters are pretty tough to find. I don’t have a problem with other brands, but just curious where you guys are finding actual AC Delco filters.

I use the PF1218 AC truck filter & bought it at Walmart.
Geez, I'm in Australia and don't have an issue. But I do order parts from the states regularly. Summit racing stocks em and if I'm running low I'll throw 1/2 dozen filters on a parts order if I'm paying shipping anyway on other parts. I'll order a T shirt or 2 as well.
