Any chance they are unilug wheels with tapered nuts? That would explain it all. Send a picture of a lug hole and the nut. If the hole in the wheel is oval shaped you need a nut with flat sides.
This a bit of a long shot but.
On my AR TT 2S wheels that I'm running on my 80 Camaro with a C5 front bake conversion. When I bolted on the wheels for the first time it didn't seem like the standard conical seat lug nuts had a lot of lug engagement. So I contacted the C5 brake supplier. The name of the company is Custom Works.com located in northern CA. He sold new me lug nuts that have a short extension on the conical seat that allows for 3/8"? more thread engagement on the lug bolt.
I'm sure you can get them anywhere like Summit. But Custom Works knew what exactly what I needed and they weren't expensive.
It sure would be nice if the OP updated with some photos. Even if he found a solution, documenting it here helps other Forum users.
YJ8 and N90 (OEM aluminum) wheels also use mag type lugs. They are also hub-centric when used on C3s. Since there is no cone on the lugs to center anything, I'm fairly convinced that this style of wheel requires a hub centric spacer to mount correctly (once tightened correctly, the spacer is no longer needed).
I've not seen it mentioned so far, but it may also be time for new lugnuts if you're not sure of their use/age, and if the studs are original it is time to replace them for sure. (49 years - they've done their duty)

I'm sorry I haven't followed up. I had to go away for a couple of days. I'll take photos and post them first thing tomorrow morning.
Thanks to everybody for their help.

I much prefer an ending where the repair is found and we learn what the fix was!
(this always helps others seeking a fix for a similar, or same, issue)
