Have to use gasket sealer that can withstand gasoline. I used permatex High Tack in the can with the brush to seal the cork gasket between tank to filler neck.

Permatex also makes a tube variety that's fuel resistant. I used it on the filler neck for my '72, just a thin smear on all surfaces prior to assembly.
thank you, permatex seems to be chosen product. I am being challenged removing the sock that does not want budge in any direction. Any thoughts on removing a stubborn sock?

Used that stuff, after much research, a little bit a go on a flip car. A Corolla with the pump/sending unit/filter combo mounted in tank. The replacement unit was a tad longer/deeper than original (bottomed out in the tank) , which did not allow full contact with the mounting surfaces of the tank, unit, or gasket between them. Whole car smelled like a gas can. I really slathered it on. Dried nice and hard and all of the vapor smells disappeared in a day. Would definitely recommend the Permatex stuff!!!.
