I think you adjust the backlash by moving the ring gear into the pinon gear. Your new set of gears should have stamping on them that says that they are a matched set, and how far out to have your pinion gear set. I think that's what I read in a book on the subject that I got at my local library, but I've never actually done it. You may want to check out your local library. If it's anything like mine they should have a lot of automotive repair books on the shelf.

I just got new ring and pinion set from Ikerd's. They are made by US Gears (Tom's Differentials sells the same stuff) and the customer service was top notch! :cheers:

Thanks for the info, unfortunally I"m stuck using the same R & P, just had to replace the ring bolts. Is there a trick to getting the springs (4) back in the carrier? I trial fit the ring & pinion earlier and the pattern looked real good, it"s just the backlash that I"m not sure of.
