Hello everyone,
I’m new to the forum, so please bear with me.
I just purchased a 78 base model with a Edlebrock performer manifold and rochester
quadrajet. I’m looking to replace the carburetor.
Not sure if I should buy the same one? or if there is something better out there. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.
You likely won't take this advice, as others would tell you to buy a new Edelbrock or Holley carb. But your VERY BEST alternative would be to have the Q-jet you presently own rebuilt by Lars Grimsrud (Colorado).
If this is of interest to you, contact him at V8FastCars@msn.com to ask if he would rebuild it. With that query, attach clear photos of the carb you have from each angle, including the P/N and date code stamped in the left-rear corner post.
As the car is over 45 years old. Hard to say of it has the original carburetor still on it or not.
If it is indeed the original carburetor. The above advice is spot on. You simply can not get a better carburetor. They do not make new ones. Other than Chinese copy's that are truly horrible.
Getting a hold of Lars with plenty of good clear photos should be your first step.
If you are referring to the Edelbrock 2101 model number, you are in luck.
That is a very popular Intake because its a Square-bore & Spread-bore both, design. That gives you lots of options.
Unless someone is smoking a dobie, no one else would recommend an Eddy carb.
Edelbrock makes the best Intakes in the world. Some great cyl heads and their cams or ok.
But their carbs? Not so much.
Several of us chose a Holley as a replacement. The 4150 series will bolt right up to that Intake.
It's just a matter of routing a new fuel supply line.
My 77, target master 350 is running 2101 intake with quadrajet, headers, exhaust and electric fans. I just installed my rebuild by Lars carb 3 days ago and its flawless.
You can’t get any better carb than getting the QJet rebuilt by Lars.
The carb on my 73 had been replaced with an aftermarket knockoff that ran like crud.
If it would have been an original I would have had Lars rebuild it.
If for some reason it isn’t rebuildable, then I would look at Quick Fuel carbs.
They are the top line that Holley offers in their line and you can buy them direct from Holley.
Your Quadrajet has a carb number on the drivers side above the secondary throttle shaft. Depending on your options there’s quite a few different numbers for ‘78s, but all start with 17058. What does yours say?

Why? There is no better carb than the stock Q-Jet for a base '78 Vette. Has the carb been hacked and destroyed by a commercial builder? If not, rebuild what you have. You cannot buy a new Q-Jet. Post a couple of photos of the carb as installed, along with the carb number, and I can tell you what your options are.
