Well, my 'guess' would be that the replacement engine was installed by a dealer, which means it was likely covered under warranty. Most dealerships would also stamp some sort of code letter/number on the the block which indicated that it was dealer installed. The choice of what was stamped was not done uniformly across all dealerships, as they were all privately owned but under contract with GM.
