If it was running fine then died it sounds like a failed/failing ignition module or coil. Have you tried starting it again after a while? Sometimes when these parts cool off they start working again.
Assuming you checked the BAT terminal on the distributor with a test light or voltmeter showing you have power, the next cause would be the ignition module or coil.
* bad module can kill a good ign coil and vice versa
So, Once you have verified good reliable power at 1976 HEI distributor's BAT terminal on dist cap:
R&R ALL Three at same time: (1) pick-up coil aka trigger (in bottom of distributor housing), (2) ignition module, (3) ignition coil.
(1) Pick-up Assembly, standard P/N LX-302
(2) Ignition Control Module, standard P/N LX-301
(3) Ignition Coil, standard P/N DR-31
** pick-up R&R requires remove dist from motor, remove gear, remove shaft from dist housing.

Hold onto your old one, buy 2 and keep one in the car at all times. I’ve had my car die on me leaving me stranded on 3 separate occasions from a bad ignition module. Definitely not a part you want to go cheap on.

Huh? What? $18?
Me thinks that includes an 18-day warranty. (junk)
You will also need a tube of Heat-Sink-Compound.
It's a paste that is applied under the "modge". Sometimes they include with a small tube.
For $18, not likely.
Without that compound, you will be on the side of the road in no time.

As mentioned above. The quality of aftermarket replacement modules is highly questionable.
This is the ONLY aftermarket module I would consider. As I'm not fond of walking.
And I can't help but notice it's NOT 18 dollars.
I just bought one ignition module. I didn't go with the 18$. I bought one for 59$ and it come with the silicone gel. Still no spark. I have 12.46 v at the distributer. I put the volt/amp meter at Ohms to verify the coil and it come back at 0 or infinity

I change the ignition module and coil and still no power.
I also check ohms at the pick up coil. It should be between 500 and 1500 ohms. Mine was at 0 ohms.
Tonight i removed the distributer to remove the pick up coil. Tomorow a new pick-up's going in.
