It's for the factory alarm. On mine there's a horn tucked back in the left rear that goes off. I'm not sure what the beeping could be about..

the 79 had the alarm integrated into the door switch. It also works on the T tops. Take one of the tops off and use the key to lock the drivers door. The alarm should go off. Then use the key to unlock the door and it should stop. Mt alarm horn went bad and was blowing a fuse.

That switch is definitely for the factory alarm. On my 77 the relay is under the console. No noise.
