I am going to apologize up front for my ignorance. I am far from being a mechanic! The needle on the tach in my 69 corvette snapped. How difficult is it to remove and replace the needle? Any recommendations of on line videos that I can watch to understand the process? Also, where is the best place to purchase a replacement needle? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.
Most of the corvette vendors would have the needle. you need to pull the driver side dash out to access the tach. if you have basic mechanical ability you can do it just take your time. you need to disconnect the tach and speedo cable then pull the dash forward a little then disconnect all the bulbs and headlight switch from the back before you remove it. also unbolt the the 2 bolts that hold up the steering column and let it hang down a little to make it easier to pull the dash forward.

The needle itself just presses on to the post. You should be able to remove it by pulling it away with your fingers around the needle hub. Resist using a tool to pry it off as the metal of the gauge face is thin and easily marked.
My speedo needle snapped a week or so ago. Is this common for these cars? It seemed like a total fluke failure in my mind.
Luckily for me speed ~= tach x2
No, I wouldn't say it's common, but does happen. My '72's tach needle dropped the long arm to the bottom of the gauge a few years ago. I think they just experience metal fatigue from the inertia.
I agree with pspicci: the apps are free and pretty darned accurate. Neither of my Corvette speedos are true when at speeds above 45mph.
One word of caution… In case you get in there and decide to clean the face of it. Do not touch any of the numbers or lines on the face of the speedo, tach or other gauges. They will smear and smudge very easily. If tempted to clean, just blow them with compressed air or a can of keyboard dusting air. You can go around the black areas with a q-tip carefully, just make sure (as previously stated) not to rub the numbers or lines.
