I was investigating the fuel smell in my garage coming from my 1980 when I took off the gas cap and thought that this doesn't look right...
My questions are, is there any reason someone might have wanted to tear up the filler neck with a screwdriver or something? Does anyone have a recommended replacement fuel sending unit? This one works just fine, but based on pictures I have seen, I'm guessing having this open hole is the cause of the fuel smell.
Back on the day, before there was unleaded fuel, the gas pump nozzles were larger in diameter than they are today.. And leaded fuel was much cheaper than unleaded. New cars were equipped with the smaller diameter fuel necks to prevent people from using leaded fueli n a car designed or unleaded. But American ingenuity always Trumps ( sorry couldn't resist) government regulation. So a simple screwdriver defeated what must have been thousands of pages of regulation. Pry the offending edges of the narrow filler open so you could push a leaded nozzle into the tank.
Not sure if that is the cause of your gas smell, but replacement fuel sending units are readily available.
All C3 filler necks are open even with a flap regardless of opening size. The cap is supposed to be sealed on your car with a good rubber seal on the cap.
I would look at other causes for the smell related to the evaporative control system, vapor separator, charcoal canister, etc.
My 1980 . I can only speak for 80-82 but those at least had a spring loaded door to cover hole. Cap appears to be vented.. I would replace the sending unit. It's a pain , I just did it on my 80
