Has anyone had their car ceramic coated? I just finished my frame off build and want to protect the paint. I’ve heard of this coating process but wanted the forums take on it. Thanks, Bill
I know it's different material a C3 vs C6, but there are lots of guys over there that have this done. Maybe they can give you their thoughts on the C6 side.
I have used C-quartz 2.0 for years and works well, fairly inexpensive on Amazon and about two applications lasts about a year depending on washes and storage but I recently used this one and was really happy with it, applied it on a fully color corrected original paint 82 (2 coats) and it looked fantastic, will be using it on my 70
easy DIY at home kit, larger bottle yields 2 good applications
You want your paint correction perfect prior to applying
Interpon is correct with letting it fully cure out... why I haven't done mine yet, frankly I would give it more than a month... perhaps closer to two, be sure its buffed and polished to exactly what you want before ceramic... no smudges, wetsand scratches, swirls etc.
And what does that SiO2/ ceramic stuff do for future paint repair?
Use something “Body Shop Safe”. I like Wizard Products. I apply by the arm strong application. Shine Master is a good base on buffed out paint. And their detail spray is applied at car shows.
I've used the Avalon line of ceramic coating twice on my family car (BMW X6) following their process (multiple steps including clay bar) and the results are really great. Fantastic shine and last at least a year. Of course no need to do clay bar step on new paint (?) and I would be concerned about fully curing.
"And what does that SiO2/ ceramic stuff do for future paint repair?"
You asked... well being in the automotive paint and collision industry for 40 years... it needs to be removed just like waxes, sealers and even PPF for future paint repairs.
There has been tons of cermaic coatings sold in the past 6-7 years since its popularity and millions of vehicles coated... many end up in collision centers every single day... im in collision centers every week all over the country that paint 10-12 vehicles a day... many have come in with ceramic coatings and they use special cleaners to remove the coatings along with the sanding of those panels... its pretty commonplace... I've done paint work on my wife's car not long after ceramic coating.
yes ceramic coatings are a little more difficult to remove but I believe thats been one of the lures of ceramic coatings... if it was easy to remove by a simple wash it wouldn't last and wouldn't have been so popular, why pay $100s for a product that comes off easy... many would prefer the long lasting durability over easy to clean off in the event I may need paint work.
much like the 70s when polyglycoat was applied on new vehicles it raised issues with pre-paint cleaning so shortly after products like "poly cracker" came out which is still available today.
DIY ceramic coating has become pretty common, which is why probably half the companies that were ceramic coating in the recent years have either closed or moved on to vinyl wrap, PPF and now colored PPF... this sure puts allot of ceramic coated vehicles in collision centers every day to get paint work.
I am really not pro or anti with ceramic coating for anybody else, I've known allot of paint correction/ceramic coating businesses and for me its not really about the "paint protection" but it can definitely improve gloss (DOI) and sure makes detailing allot easier.
Hello G,
Do you have any experience/knowledge about using the coatings on old paint like acrylic lacquer and enamel?
Does it help those paints "shine"?
What happens to paint systems that don't have clear as the top coat?
Regards....

hello Alan... I've done both my 82 and 78 both all original paint and both looked amazing, frankly they may have been the biggest before and after difference... I also spent days on color correction first
