Default Holley 750 Intake Advice

Hi,

I have a 1973 Corvette with a stock L46 350 engine. I want to replace my old Edelbrock carburetor with a Holley 750 Classic (4160). The car already has an aluminum intake manifold, but I’d like to change it to gain a bit more horsepower, without making any engine modifications.

I just want an intake that works well with a Holley 750.

Which intake do you recommend: Edelbrock 2140, Edelbrock 2701, or another better option?

Thanks.

"old Edelbrock carburetor" --- which model ?
"stock L46 350 engine" --- which year ?

EPS 2701 for the squarebore 4160

The engine is a 1973 L46 350, and the old Edelbrock carburetor was probably a 1406.

You can just get the carb adapter plate

Don't ever use an adapter plate. They completely destroy all efficiency of the manifold and the carb, making any gains you might get from a better carb an actual loss instead. Use the right manifold for the carb.

That's just terrible advice. Or did you forget the sarcasm emoji?

I checked the parts. The carburetor is an Edelbrock 1403, and the intake manifold is a WEIAND Speed Warrior. I believe this intake is a replacement for the stock one. I’m looking for an intake manifold that can give me more horsepower and better performance.

A Weiand Speed Warrior like the one at the (Amazon) link? That's for a square bore style carburetor, like the Edelbrock 1403 (Amazon Link)

Figure out what carb (or EFI throttle body) you want, and work backwards. If you want a square bore carb, you don't need to swap that intake.

Without other mods (heads, cam, etc), you won't get better performance. You will get a better experience with an EFI swap, and possibly better fuel mileage.

If you're going to go with a good Holley, it would be an upgrade from that old Carter AFB 500 CFM re-pop, aka, "Edelbrock Performer." The Holley 750 Vac Sec 4160 will run well if you set up the secondary opening rate correctly (the stock spring will not allow the secondaries to open at any reasonable rpm...). If you're going to go with a square-bore Holley, changing the intake to something else will have no significant effect, if any at all, on your L48, which peaks out on power below 5500 rpm.

No, it's not. It's a square-bore intake, unlike the stock spread bore intake. It is designed to accept a Holley flange pattern, and cannot be used with the stock spread bore Q-Jet carb.

I might be missing something here. L46s weren’t an option in 1973. OP, I think you mean an L48.

Regardless you have the first year of the significantly higher hoods on every trim level, meaning you have more choices for an intake. Personally I run an Edelbrock 2601 on my ‘76. Fits under the stock hood which is the same as yours, looks great, and is supposedly one of the best intakes for street driven RPM applications. Mines a dual pattern, meaning it can handle your Holley or a Quadrajet, but if you want the square bore only version there’s the 7501.

Here is the thread about hood clearance.

I seriously doubt yours has a 1973 L46 350; no such engine option in 1973.

AFAIK, final year for rpo L46 was MY1970 (after 1970, compression ratios were drastically reduced corporate-wide)

again, as I suggested in P# 2 --- for the squarebore 4160, edelbrock EPS manifold P/N 2701

Use the 2701 Performer EPS, a 1204 Intake gasket, ARP stainless bolts and a 0-90670 Holley Truck Avenger. There is simply no better calibrated carb out of the box than this unit for 300-400hp engines....
Lars and myself swear by these carbs and we were using them years before we knew each other....the damn things just work. Set idle screws, floats and let er rip.....400hp applications add 3-4 to the jet and done.
Not cheap now....but worth every penny. The Truck Avenger and Classic Holley HP are made here....and that is why they are expensive....
I keep one on the bench as a test carb for customer vehicles....

Now you will not gain a ton....maybe 15hp or so....but with the proper timing setting and curve it will feel like 50hp.....very quick response and signal.

750 is too big and the 4160 is too expensive now to not have secondary jets.
