Okay, I see everybody says to loosen the nut behind the bracket on the frame side. Then you can just basically slide the whole thing right out right? My question is how in God's name do you get to that nut? I have a 79 l82 4-speed and I swear to God I can't plastic Man myself enough to get to it. All I want to do is get it out of the side of the engine so I can pull the engine

If you disconnect both control rods you can turn the rod so the upper arm is more out of the way.
That may give you more room.

Keep in mind there is a washer with a tab on it under the nut, the tab is in a locating hole on the frame bracket.
If you don't back the nut off far enough the tab will not disengage from the frame bracket.

Here's my opinion. Remove the driver's side splash shield. It's a triangular piece of sheet metal that's bolted to the frame. Crouching outside of the driver's side front wheel, look at the space between the driver's side front wheel and the side of the frame. The frame side here is where the splash shield is bolted to the frame. The splash shield prevents debris picked up by the wheel from being thrown inside the car.

Once you have the splash shield removed, laying underneath the car, you have an easy shot at that nut. Even a ham fisted guy will have an easy access.

Bummer about no side access.
The splash shield is probably the best idea then.

If your going to pull the engine you might have enough wiggle room to just dislodge the engine side ball pivot when you have it on the cherry picker.Might even be able to get it back in the same way.
