These notches pretty much line up when the gauge is installed. Good visual indication when lying on your back.
And just looking at your picture it appears that two of the plate looks bent to me.
Thank you... I did see the notches but used a red and yellow paint pen across them all to see better on my back under the car.
thats the old shifter I removed and clear why I was having issues for sure... allot of play between the levers

the same thing happened to me today in my '72. Managed to get it back in the garage, and glad to find this thread.

after all that I removed the whole shifter assembly again because I was having a problem with the reverse key removal cable binding (replaced it) then removed it all again because the reverse lock out pin spot weld broke and worked its way out a bit so had to re-weld it... now its about a 45 minute job to get the whole assembly out top to bottom (no underside exhaust helps) its shifting like butter now.
