I have assembled the whole center gauges and console in my 71 with A/C and everything works except the shifter plate/indicator light.
Is there a seperate ground for the shifter plate?
There should be a spade terminal that mounts to one of the screws below the cigarette lighter that the double black wire connects to. That is the ground on my 69 for the console.
It looks like the same two wires Alan shows so could be different in your 71's.

I believe that Alan’s photo showing the TWO Black wires connected to the HVAC Control are the ground needed for the cigarette lighter and the shift indicator light. In many cases there is a single ground that serves multiple devices / controls.

Exactly what I was thinking.
When everything is assembled the shifter light gets the ground through the heater control.
But I am seriously thinking about adding another ground to the shifter plate itself.
