1968 C3 question

does the top of the radiator support have a slight concave shape looking at it - ie: towards the engine when viewed from above?

1968 had at least 3 different radiator supports. Which engine and with or without AC and which transmission?

What I’m seeking is a vertical view of this piece, as in looking straight down from above.

Thanks.

it is an April build, 327 manual, no A/C.

currently has a copper radiator, but that is going to change.

Thanks.

The support is formed via stamped steel construction so is not going to be perfectly straight but shouldn’t have any noticeable curvature in the plane you are concerned about unless it’s been in an accident.

that’s what I’m concerned about.
I will take photo and post tomorrow.
I hope to have a string line across that plane to illustrate what I’m talking about.
car has no real evidence of an accident, but who knows- everything seems to fit just fine, gaps on hood are good and no evidence of glass work in that area (based on strip down to the grey primer level).

thanks.

I have a mid-April 68 small block. I added factory AC to it years ago. I ended up removing the support and welded the bottom brackets for an AC big block car. This allowed me to put in a larger DeWitt radiator. The car runs at 180 degrees in the Florida heat and gridlock traffic. Jerry

Hello,
I agree with MW and 69L
The support is typically flat.
The base engine, 4-speed, no a/c car's RADIATOR is FLAT across it's width and height
It fits snuggly against the radiator support.
The metal fan shroud is flat too.
Regards.....

These are the photos I was looking for, I think.

I’ll take a few and post, but it looks like a bit of straightening is in my future.

radiator is already out, so removal of the brace should be a bit easier.

Default Radiator support.

great news for me. I took a better look when I was going to take photos and found that the support is straight after all. I guess that the curvature at the top gave me an optical illusion combined with the backward lean

thanks to for the help.

of the radiator.

of the radiator.
You will find it easier to install the radiator if you remove the 2 bolts on each side of the support located in the wheel well and loosen but do not remove the 2 bolts under the support and push the support forward.

I was looking at that exact type of “tilt in” type of process.

Hello,
Nice Discovery!
It's important to get the various foam seals and flap seals in place.
These are responsible for getting the air flow through the radiator and not around it.
Regards.....

68 only had a additional piece of stamped metal that bolts to the top of the rad support with a rubber flap stapled on to seal hood to rad support. dont see them everyday big block and small block is different. it was missing on my big block 68 luckily i found one.
