Default Another Timing Issue

I cranked up my engine to set up the timing after re-setting the valves. I had the distributer contact pointer pointing at #1 spark plug. It was idleing fine but the timing light showed the mark on the balancer way below the tab on the cam cover. I rotated the distributer to bring it up but the vacuum canister came into contact with the intake manifold. I don't relish pulling all the plugs and taking off the fan and pullets as well as removing the altinator to go back and find the compression stroke again. I am Thinking of pulling the dizzy and droping it back anothe notch but do I go clockwise or counter clock wise..
My original post was written 3/13 but didn't have my pass word handy so I t looks like it disappeared. different post same issue. Thanks for any quick advice.

Suggest first
Verify outer inertia ring of damper has Not slipped.
Do so via Verify #1 piston itself is at True TDC when zero groove on outer ring aligns Exactly with zero mark on timing tab

Yep, I just replaced my OEM dampener due to 1” plus slippage

Damper is new engine only has a couple of hours runtime

If they're virtually new, but rubber wasn't correctly installed at factory, they'll fail when new.
Above verification don't cost much and may prevent a feller from chasin' his tail.

There is no sane reason to pull spark plugs, fan, pulley, and alternator to check TDC - that's crazy. Just install your distributor correctly and set the timing. E-mail me for the "How to Install Your Distributor" tech paper. You can correctly install the distributor, and make sure you're on the #1 compression stroke, in less than 15 minutes.
