Sounds like a great improvement! Regarding timing, it does sound a bit backwards that changing your vacuum advance to a ported spot made the engine run smoother. Usually going from 12 degrees to whatever it’s adding would make it better. What are you reading at idle timing wise with the VA plugged in?
