Default 82 shifter position question

After pulling the shifter to rebuild it due to the shifter pawl not properly engaging with the stops, as in I could go from drive all the way to park without having to press the shifter button to release it. As a result, I rebuilt the shifter and got everything connected. Everything is as smooth as butter now.

When in neutral, can pull it back into drive without having to press the button and I believe I am able to pull it back into 3, again, without pushing the button and to get to 2 I have to again press the button and then can pull it from 2 to 1 without the button. Is that normal behavior? I was somewhat expecting it to stop once I pulled it into drive and would have had to push a button to get it to 3-2-1. Is that how it's supposed to be or is something off with the way it's setup?

Neutral to drive and back does not require the button — the slot is the same one for both. To get into lower range gears, you do have to push the button in for the step down, but to go back to drive you just push the lever forward with no button needed.

Of course to get out or go into P the button is required.

From the pic below, N/D are the same slot and 2 & 1 (up through '81) or 3 & 2 for the '82 700R4 are the same slot.

* From another thread it appears the 700R4 trans for '82 does not have 1st gear select-able unless the slotted shift plate has been modified.

Here's a pic of the "gates" in the late-C3 GM shifter with P at the far left.

Sounds OK to me but you can follow this thread and check to see if you put it together properly. I used this guidance to refurbish mine and mine was a POS rusty thing....... and shifted beautifully from the get-go...

That's a great write up, especially to explain the adjustment of the switch measuring continuity. Mooser's explanation of the lower washer on the shaft and how it works along with the button spring is worth a gazillion dollars!

Thank you for sharing this. Park, reverse, and neutral seem to line up just fine. The issue I have right now is when I shift it to D, it is right in the middle of the N and D gate, then when I shift to 3, it then hits the end of the gate.

I followed the shop manual procedure which says to put the transmission into park and the shifter into park and then connect the shifter cable. I did that, but the shifter cable seems to be about a 1/8 of an inch too short. I am able to sort of "force it" but it just doesn't seem correct. It seems like the cable bracket that is on the transmission needs to move forward a bit but it's not adjustable and I've already tried loosening up the bracket to move it forward but it doesn't move any more forward than it already is.

I also tested to make sure I was in the correct gear of the transmission by having the lever turned as far clockwise as it would go (P) and attempted to roll the rear tire, it would not budge forwards or backwards. If I put it in to the second position (R), I could rotate the wheel.

I'm assuming the 700R4 has the same sort of shift lever... There's an adjustment in the shift lever to align the cable on the pin. Take a look at this video on adjusting the transmission lever to ensure the cable and trans are in the same position. For the adjustment, start about 5:15 mark.
