Default Steering Column Bracket Seal Or No Seal?

I’m doing the fit check and installation of the steering column and the support brackets in my 73 coupe.
The Parts and Accessories Catalog shows a seal as part of the assembly, part number:3919772.
The 73 AIM does not show or mention any seal as part of the installation.
The seal is available through Corvette Central.
Is anyone using this seal as it isn’t shown in the AIM?
Thanks, Greg

Its a piece of thin rubber molded with a 180* bend in it. My 69 had one. I put it back on after I painted all the pieces.

My various years Corvette Parts Books list seal 3919772 as a radiator shroud side seal for all 68-69 Corvettes, 70's manual trans no air small blocks and 71-72 small blocks with automatic, air or LT-1. I can't find any mention of 3919772 being used as a steering column seal? 3919772 is just a flat foam self sticking seal that comes in a roll.

In looking through a couple different parts books, my 1970 book does not show the seal in the illustration showing the 67-70 column mounting. My 72 book has the same 67-70 column illustration as the 70 book (without the seal), and the parts book illustration "71-73" with the seal you posted above but as a 71-72 since it's a 72 book. I don't have a 73 book and my 75 book is missing the illustration pages. In my 76 parts book, the only column support illustration is labeled as 74-76 and does not show a seal. In my later books (78, 80, 81 etc) the "74-76" illustration from the 76 book is shown 69-82, and there is no mention of a seal for any year in the later books.

I'm assuming the parts book page you're showing above with the seal is from a 1973 Parts Book? Based on my assorted parts books and your 73 book, I would guess some sort of seal was used at least in 71-73, though it is interesting that bazza77 says above that his 69 has a seal. Neither my the 70 or 72 books include a seal in the illustrations covering 1969?

We parted out a lot of car in the past, but it's probably been close to 30 years since the last one, and I just can't recall if I've ever seen a column support seal or not.

Its not really a seal, its a chafe guard. My 70 has one in this location. I assume GM just used a section of 3919772 shroud seal for this purpose.
My 70 is an early build

A chafe guard makes perfect sense because there is really nothing for it to seal.
Non the less, I ordered it and when it arrives I’ll post a couple pictures.
Thanks!

FWIW , my 69 was manual steering so it has the heavy cast iron bracket bolted in under the windscreen area. May or may not make a difference.

I received the seal today and it appears to be the same material in the picture Alan posted.
It was in a roll about three feet long.
I wasn’t able to work it around all the edges as one piece so I cut into three separate sections.
Once I install the column, if I don’t see any interference issues, I’ll tack the edges with a couple drops of gasket sealer to hold it in place and that should do the trick.
It probably isn’t necessary, but it very well could be.
Thanks again for the help guys!
Greg

Looks good!
Question, is the seal the same looking on the backside on the 2 vertical pieces?
If so could you swap left & right pieces so the 45* would but up to the top piece?
Of course you would be a little short on the very bottom...

I tried cutting the rubber several different ways.
Because of the shape of the bracket if I allowed the side pieces to go any higher they would stick out towards the top.
The way I cut them is so they would lay as flat as possible against the bracket.
The right side still laid fairly flat but the left side looked funny.
The way they are, I will only need to tack down the inside of the seal to the bracket.

Hello Greg and Joe,
After seeing the photos I continue to think there isn't a rubber strip like that on the bracket in my 71's cowl.
Regards....

I’m sure you are correct Alan and I also think Wolfe’s guess is a good possibility for it being a chafe guard.
For now I’ll leave it on without tacking it to the bracket.
When I install the dash I’ll be able to tell more if it actually has some type of purpose.
If not, I can simply pull it off and toss it in the trash.
