Hey guys, I going to be changing out my fan shroud on my 80 vett. I would just like to know if there are any good tips and what problems I could run into? Thanks lou
Hi and good luck i changed mine on my 74 BB and i learnt a few more swear words during it .Yours i hope won't be as bad ,you might want to unbolt the rad support and lean it to the front of the car .I hurd of this after i fought getting mine in ,hopfully someone else will chime in and give you and answer.DAVE :flag
Cut it into 10 pieces and put a thermo fan in its place!
On my 77 I have to loosen the top of the rad, turn it upside down, swear a lot, pull it up with one hand while holding the rad out of the way with the other, swear some more, count to 10 ...............it's not fun!
Good Luck..I have had the shroud on my 80 off a few times for various mods
engine swaps, etc. It's not a fun job. There are a number of ways to make it a little easier. Off with the fan for starters, then loosten off the fan shroud brackets. Your rad should be drained as it is also helpful to loosten/take off your hoses for extra room when you start to pull the shroud. It also makes a difference in the frustration level depending on wether you have a long or short water pump as the shorter gives you just that much extra room. Once everything is loose, you kind off pull the shroud while you are rotating it in a half circle kind off motion. This is the part where you scrape the crap out of the fins on the rad. It's a real production honestly. My car is a driver and not NCRS with a few mods so I added one of my own. I took my dremel tool and cut the shroud back by about and inch on the bottom where you can barely see it. It worked great and you can't tell it's been trimmed. It doesn't effect the cooling any as it wa really just extra material that rested on the cross member. It gave me all the extra room I needed and I can now pull the whole assembly in about half an hour....with less than half the cursing...Good Luck...This is one of those jobs that really gets your blood pressure up...

Look in the front wheel wells and you will see the bolt heads for the radiator support. Remove those bolts and push the support with the radiator forward to gain clearance to remove the shroud.
Just wanted to update every on the fan shroud project. Thank you for all your suggestion. I tried all you suggestion and just could not get it out with out damaging my radiator which is new so this is what I did to get it out. Note, I don't have and smog equipment so this might not work for you. I took the A/C compressor of the bracket and laid it on the A-arm (did not open a/c system). Removed the fan and fan clutch assembly off the water pump. Removed the radiator ( I know it's messy but trust me, well worth it). Fan shroud lifts right out :) . Took about an hour. Now I just have to put it back together. :mad Thanks again guys. lou
