heck if you want some real power handling, forget the ford. get a Winters Rearend :) they come in a independent setup, only issue I see with them is no LSD which I would much rather have. Best of all, they can easily be found for right around 500 bucks, quick change rear end, and cheap parts replacment.
My dad has a nodular 9inch in the back of his '64. He has moved the frame rails in, installed coilovers, ladder bars, and other things. He has a fuel cell in the car and relocated the battery (well, it's a drag car, so you need two batteries anyway, so stock placement wouldn't even work) to behind the rear bumper next to the fuel cell.
I took a crappy picture of it this winter. I couldn't really get under it too well and the ground was covered in bird excrement.

Here's some help.
Some early GTOs (goats) came from the factory w/ FoMoCo (marked on them) 4spds.! The demand for 4spds. was higher than expected.
Both MoPar & F*rd have used Q-Js.
Not to pick nits, but the FoMoCo tranny that Pontiac used was a HD 3-speed manual with a Hurst shifter. With the torquey pontiac motor, you really didn't need 4 gears (although the wow factor was higher). The 4-speeds were B-W, Saginaw, or Muncie thru the years. Joe
