Default High/Low torque starter motor difference

We are trying to get a replacement starter for the '71, 350 and two times we have been sent starters that look like low torque starters. What came out was the original robust looking unit with the long solinoid and both GM and Eklers sent units with the short solinoid. Both were billed as HIGH torque units. What is the difference? I think the origional is a high torque(long solinoid) and someone may have pulled a switcheroo on us as the high torque is a tad bit more expensive(to say the least). Please advise. :chevy

I don't think the length of the solenoid is the determining factor. The high torque starter has extra windings which move the electrical connection to the motor farther toward the front of the starter. From my experience, all of the solenoids were the same length and there was copper spacer and longer screw to make the connection between the high torque motor and the solenoid.

Yes the high torque starters have a copper bar and rod from the solenoid to the starter, not a braided wire. Joe
