Default 700 R4 ?

i decided i want gas mileage in my car so I'm considering a 700. Besides bowtieoverdrives.com what else is out there? has anyone gone to a local tranny shop for the swap? and how much would i be looking at?

I know Bowtie Overdrives kit is 1600 or so, I was wondering if it has been done for about the same at a shop

What kind of mileage do you get now with the 3.08 gear? Nice looking car too. I like the black wall look. I did mine myself. Everyone says the 200r4 is easier. Less mods I guess.

right now i get about 12-14mpg on the highway with it <shrugs> I was thinking of the 700R because of its nutty first gear ratio :steering:

I would go with the 200R4 instead. It bolts right in, without having to shorten the driveshaft. I don't know if I would trust any shop to do this. But I think I remember someone on the forum having the whole thing done for around $1600. I just can't remember who.

Just the same, if you decide to do it yourself, enough people here have done it, so there would be a ton of help.

I bought a bowtie 700R4 for my 80 when I swapped in a 350 HO. I only have about 600 miles on it so far, but it sure is a lot of fun. I bought the whole "kit" and only had to have the drive shaft shortened. The work was done at a local Vett shop and they said the most difficult part is setting up the linkage between the carb and the trans for correct shift points etc.
Car is currently at the paint and body shop to convert from turd brown to, you guessed it, Electron Blue. The project is actually for my soon to be 16 year old son.

It's hard to say what it costs. Lets say you buy a $1350 tranny from B&M or TCI Then you have to have the shifter modded and the drive line shorter. Then a cross member. Then the exhaust hast to be moved outboard.

Years ago when i did it. it was a money pit and has been ever since. I'm going stick and selling my racing 700R4 with T.C. for a $1000 or $1500 with TC and drive shaft. I have $3000 something in them alone.

Bow tie is the best. I did it and the kits really help. I have a 3.55 rear.. No problem.
