Time and time again on this forum I hear of flat cams and other BS from Comp Cams. I would say that we should spread the word that this company is just bad. :cuss
gkull,
Since you brought it up... if Comp Cams is quality deficient, then who would be the best cam grinders to go to? Lunati, Crane.....?????????
I've only ordered directly from Comp a few times, but they messed something up every single time I've used them. Once, they ground the cam on the wrong LSA, once they shipped the cam "signature required" even though I specificially asked them not to do that when I ordered, once they gave me retainers that would not work with the springs (ordered at a matched set!) They appear to have absolutely no attention to detail or quality control. By the way, I think I know where their attention does go, the new catalog they just mailed is beautiful! :lolg:
I've never really had any problems with comp. Though I don't order direct from them, I have made a few phone calls and they seemed pretty decent and whilling to help me out.
Cool setup...but desktop dyno gets a little high in their estimates when you select roller rockers. They say you should put in solid and it'll be more accurate. This info is from what I've read here at the forum. GL!!!!
Massvette and you others that ask. I think that out of the major companies I would always buy Crane Cams.
They have quality parts with a great trade in. I have to return my old shot in the butt roller lifters. But they sent me the Crane Pro that Summits lists for $539 for $340. You can also order direct and sometime save over what Summit or some others price is.
I'm also running the Crane Billet steel timing gear and chain & H6R multi spark ignition. Both of them have performed flawlessly over the past two years.
Hate to hear of the troubles George. I think it really matters if you happen to know someone there or can at least find someone you trust.
Some of the race guys I know swear by them, but they just call up their buddy and get instant service.
I've used Comp cams in the past and had no issues. I have their roller lifters now. Of course I had to get them to rebuild them, but according to everyone but lucky 'ole you, I got excellent mileage out of them. Rebuild service was fine.
They just did my rockers too. Upon clean up for re-assembly I found one of the Comp magnum rockers with an outer lip of one of the trunnion races broken off allowing the needles to slip out. I sent them all back to them and even though they are out of warranty they handled it fine.
If you get the right person at Comp, they are fine.
My cam was done by Engle. Mark Engle spent a good deal of time working with me when I originally spec'd it and has again spent time with me to work out a new combo. He was willing to go dig out some lobes that aren't in the normal catalogs to get what I wanted. I respect him greatly for the time he put into my project and really appreciate having a real "gearhead" to talk to rather than a "computer input geek" that can only recommned what pops up without any idea what all the numbers mean.
He earned my business again for the new cam. I think there is value to using some of the smaller companies sometimes. Personal service is often better.
All that said, Crane makes great products. Engle buys their roller blanks from them! I also had great luck with Lazer on a roller cam too. Cam Motion is a strong one as well as Ultradyne if you follow the Super Stock racers.

Re: My new Solid Roller cam! (gkull)
You deserve better service than that when you drop that much money on them gkull. :nonod: Though I like thier products, sounds like they'r start'n to slide in quality and service. :iagree:
Sorry about the Comp cam problems, George. Is Crane any better?
Yeah! I've been dreaming solid roller for a long time now. Don't mind the adjusting every gas-stop, but what about reliability? I hate wiped lobes. WHo is hte best for reliability out there?
Stefan69 - With good locking nuts and better yet a stud girdle also. You can go 3000+ miles between even checking.
I've only used Billet steel grinds. But I would go with a milder out of the book grind before you start paying for custom parts. http://www.cranecams.com has some nice SR cams for our SBC or BBC's. They have milder ramps and sleeved gears so you don't need Carbon fiber distib. gears.
You could basically call up crane cams and say I would like the whole shebang!:) Timing gear and chain, cam, pushrods, rockers, matched springs and retainers. Then just buy a Roller button timing cover and your on the road again.
