mechanical fuel pump testing
Trying to figure out if I have a problem or my test is faulty.
I disconnected the line from the fuel pump to the carb. Inserted a tee with a third line running to my fuel pressure gauge. Hooked line back to carb.
At 1000 rpm pressure constant 8 lbs - new pump
at 800 rpm gauge fluctating between 0 - 10 lbs maybe more 10 is gauge limit
And old mechanic book said it should remain constant at idle, if not the pump is faulty.
Put on the second new pump and test does the same thing. Different brand.
I rechecked the lines - can blow air in the return and hear it escaping in the tank.
Hooked the electric pump direct to the carb and get a constant 6 lbs engine at any rpm.
Is my test wrong or do I have a problem? And if I have a problem, any possible solutions?

I have two gauges - a new one that will read to 10 lbs and an antique one that reads to 7 lbs. Both do the same thing. It's got to be something obvious that I am over looking
