Default Astro Vent ????

Welll I finally have a set of Astro Vent doors that I think is working correctly. I guess the previous owner must have disconnected everything and hoped it would make the car run better.

This is what I know about how MY Astro Vent works. Let me know if this is correct.
With the car running,
1. All the heat and vent controls off the doors are opened.
2. Vent controls closed the doors are opened.
3. With the rotary heat, de-ice, de-fog switch in any position the doors are opened.
4. When you select any temp/heat setting the door goes closed.

I hope this is correct because none of it has worked correctly since I have had the car. Let me know if any of you guys works the same way or if it is not working correctly.

That sounds about right. When heater is off, they should be open. When dial is set to anything they should shut. That's how mine works.

I recall reading a description of the operation of the Astro-Vent system somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can remember where. :D I have AC so get the blockoff plates in the rear, not the real Astro Vent. ;) I saw it in one of three places - The owner's manual - The GM Chassis Service Manual - or the NCRS Operations Manual. ~Juliet

As I recall the Astro Vent system on my 69 worked mainly for fresh air circulation. If anything is turned on the doors close, otherwise they are open. Back in 68/69 this was supposed to be a big deal to always have fresh air in car without the wind wings. (Remember those)?

Juliet hit the nail on the head. I went and looked in my 1970 owners manual and on page 28, for those that may be following this, it says,

-Whenever the heater temperatur contorl is moved toward the "Hot" position, the rear deck air exhaust doors close to retain teh heated air in the vehicle.

So there is my answer and now I understand what that manual is for now. Thanks for all the help.

Carl, you are correct, this is where the vents are located. If you look at the back wall in your car you should see these vents, if your car is not equipped with air.
