Here a more stupid question :
How exactly do I find out if my engine pings ?
Is this a loud noise ?
Would I hear this more at the engine or from the exhaust ?
My engine is a 427 CI big block with solid lifters.
I'm asking this as I can hear some kind of a mettalic sound coming from the HOOKER side exhausts, but this at any RPM and speed.
Problem is that I installed differnt mufflers, but also advanced the ignition to Lars's specs. I think the sound is more muffler related. ( I hope ).
Hi
Using 98 Octane ( European Octane , not sure how it's numbered in USA ) and adding lead additive.
Timing is set to 38 BTDC at 3000 RPM with vacuum disconnected.
Initial about 11. Idle with vacuum connected about 22.
Total at 3000 about 51.
Again, where would I hear the pinging from ? The engine or the side exhausts?
Thanks Gunther
The sound will come from the engine compartment, not the exhaust. You've got a bit more timing than I would have. I'd have more like 34 to 36 degrees of mechanical advance with the vacuum plugged. Depending on the camshaft I may not even connect the vacuum advance.
Disconnect the vacuum advance and plug it. If you still here the noise it is most likely not pinging.
Pinging is fairly loud and will come from the engine. It will be more pronounced when you accelerate and will almost go away when cruising. If you are plugging in your vacuum line and getting 11 degrees more of advance then you may be plugging it into the wrong carburator port. Try this one:
As already posted, pinging comes from the engine, not the exhaust. Pinging only occurs under load, more often while accellerating from low rpm in higher gears. Did you verify that your timing was all in by 3,000 rpm?. If not, you could have more total timing than you thnk.
Hi
Thanks for all answers.
Yes, total advance is definately in at 3000, actually already a bit B4.
This light metal sound , like a slight knocking comes only from the exhausts.
It sounds like if a loose bolt ( like a header Bolt ) is singing.
I'm very positive it comes from this mufflers, just holed tube without any glasspacking or any other sound absorbing stuff.
And I did already realize this sound B4 I advanced the timing. It only came into my mind after resetting the ignition timing due to the possibility of pinging.
Anyway, I will watch the engine for pinging noise during the next future and specially during hot days. ( it rarely goes over 30 C over here).
Thanks a lot. Günther :seeya
Unfortunately, my 4150 HOLLEY double pumper carb is a early type and has only 2 full vacuum ports, so at any port, vacuum comes already in at idle.
The engine starts up good, idles right away at 750 even with the engine being cold ( no choke on carb ) and the power during acceleration is enormeous, without bogging when slamming the pedal to the floor.
This was all differnt ( worse ) B4.
If the mufflers are new it may just be the exhaust gas hitting the muffler body. This quite often gives a metalic pingging sound until a decent ammount of carbon has built up in the mufflers.
