I recently bought a 69 that had been sitting for several years. The mice had several large nest throughout the car, under the seats, over the window rack, in the console, in the air ducts, etc. Any good ideas on getting the stains out of the carpet and the stink out of the car. The carpet is new, so I hate to replace it.
If the car has been sitting for a couple of years, the carpet isn't new!
Just replaced the carpet in mine and couldn't believe the mouse poop in it. If you can take the carpet out and give it a good cleaning (shake it first, vacuum it, then shampoo it) it will help. I wouldn't recommend leaving it in the car if there is as much mouse contamination as you say. It needs a thorough cleaning or replacement. Good luck!
The vette I have had new carpet put in when it was transformed from a coupe to a vert in 1989 and then stored the next 13 years. The carpet looks new, but I've cleaned it twice and have air fresheners in the car under a breathable car cover(windows open) going on 6 months now and it has not totally cleared up the sealed up time it went through. Getting there though. Getting mouse poop smell out though is a different story.
Don't even try stuff like Febreeze--I completely soaked the carpet in my kid's tree house with the stuff trying to get the smell out & finally just had to replace it (and set lots of traps!). BTW, I don't know if hantavirus ever got as far north as Tennessee, but that's deadly stuff (though fairly rare). and is transmitted through contact with rodent feces--wear a dust mask while you clean that carpet!
Coffee grounds will absorb cat urine odors so why not rat pee pee? I have heard from car detailer that his trick is to place coffee grounds (unused) in closed car for several days to eliminate cat urine odors.
