Last fall the speedometer on my '74 quit working. This spring I checked the gear at the tranny and it was worn badly. I replaced it and all was well until last weekend when it quit working. I just looked a the new gear and it's bad again (it's worn ob-round with whiskers of damaged material on some of the teeth). Anyone have any idea as to what could be causing the gears to wear out?
The main drive cable seams to turn easily as does the 90 degree housing that holds the plastic gear. The 90 degree housing is held in place at the tranny by a locking clip but is actually not held in place very tightly. Is it supposed to be somewhat floppy when bolted into position?
jimvette999 and cheeseral say that there should be fluid come out of the side of the tranny when you remove the speedo gear assembly (with the o-ring). When I pull out mine out, I don't leak any oil!!! Maybe my oil is too low causing the speedo gears to run dry and wear out. Is that possible? In any case, sounds like I need to check the fluid level.
I had the same problem back when I first got mine. The car had been sitting for quite some time and when it sits the top half of the speedo drive gear on the output shaft is not covered in oil. The drive gear is metal (while the driven gear is plastic). It started to rust and would then trash the driven gears over and over. Only fix on mine was to take the tranny out and replace the drive gear.
