my engine seems to have a very slight pinging to it upon acceleration...
i do understand what ping is (predetination)...
is m timing a little off?
now for the "stupid question"...
if so...what direction do i turn the distributor?
clockwise or counter clockwise?
OR...any other ideas?
it seems worse when the a/c is on...
Hey Gary,
Are you running premium fuel? or scrimping and runnin' the cheap stuff?
That could do it. Mine pings unless I run 92, but that just might be a quick remedy for other problems I know. My vacuum advance might be advancing too far at higher rpm (when it usually pings), I might have carbon build up in the combustion chamber causing a slight increase in compression ratio, or my base timing might be too far advanced. For now I am just running 92 octane....I need to buy a timing light and a Lars recurve kit :yesnod:

EVERY SINGLE THING in the engine is brand new(except for the block itself) including the distributor...
and IT has a kit...
mine seems to want to ping at low RPMs...like taking off from a stop...
and the ping is ever so slight...but i still dont like it...
First thing I'd try is to plug the vacuum advance and see if the ping stops. If so the vacuum advance needs to be limited. I spent a month and a half re inventing the wheel on this one. Ended up with a Crane adjustable vacuum advance with almost all the advance locked out with the limiter plate.
Use the blue/silver spring combo that comes with the kit,and set the initial to 14-15 degrees. Felt like a shot of NOS to me!
I don't know what year your car is, but I know mine pings a bit going up hills if I use lower octane. Owning a number of cars back in the 70s, I remember this being fairly common. The solution was, as others noted, run higher octane or retard the timing.
Hi :seeya
If pinging (pinking!) is due to timing then it's because the timing is to far advanced at the rpms the pinging occurs at (the fuel ignites too early, thus trying to push the piston back down before it's reached TDC). You're right in wanting to stop it as severe damage can result from it, but has it been doing it for long? Reason I ask is that sometimes I can get BAD pinging after a fuel fill-up. Some brands of fuel seem more prone to it than others (even supposedly at the same octane) & fuel from different filling stations can sometimes cause pinging, so if you've only had the problem recently try a different brand of fuel b4 changing the timing.

Re: question about pinging... (SIGNGUY)
Gary -
Aren't you running one of my curve kits in your distributor...? The kit instructions have details for curing the pinging: back off the total timing from 36 to 34, and then back off in 2-degree increments from there if pinging persists until it stops.
