Thanks for replys. I've been thru this before with cars and if it's too good to be true it usaually is but the car is only about 45 mins from where I live so you never know I could be pleasantley suprised with a decent fairly accurate driver. I will let everyone know how it goes. How much are 68-72 cars going for with a NOM? This car is supposed to have the correct engine but if I get in a money crunch the C-3 would have to go before the C-2. No hard feelings I hope ;) I don;t forsee any money preoblems but with this economy you never know
Without the original block I'd say that car would still probably be worth something in the $12-13K range. Matching number block, should be worth $14-15K or better.
BTW, as you said, sometimes too good to be true really is true. Ask me sometime about the deal I got on my matching #s big block vert with only 49K miles on it!
I thought the seller said it needs paint. That paint looks real good. How old are those pics? It looks like it has the cloth seats, or they were re-upholstered in cloth. It doesn't look like the custom interior. It does have power windows and power brakes, but not A/C. The brake booster has some rust one it, but the master cylinder looks to be in better shape, perhaps m/c was replaced at some point, but booster may be original. It's missing the chome distributor cover and AIR pump. The bumpers look like they aren't rusting through...good sign that maybe the undercarriage is still OK.
As mentioned by others check the frame for rust just like for a C2. Make sure everything works...windows, headlights, wiper door, removable backlight, heater-coolant cut-off valve, and alarm if it's got one.
Rockn-Roll,
The owner says it needs paint because it has some contaminents under the paint causing it to bubble  I've heard of this before with fiberglass cars but have never seen it. What is a removable backlight? Thanks for the observations...
It looks to be worth the $12k he's asking, but digital pictures usually lie. You can't judge paint by them.
If the engine has not been rebuilt, factor in the cost of rebuilding it or buying a crate engine. Does it smoke?
If the underside hasn't been done, factor the cost of rebuilding trailing arms, rear end differential, suspension bushings, shocks, springs, ball joints, brakes...oh yeah, don't forget the clutch and tranny with 152k on them.
Factor in the paint, since you probably won't tolerate the blisters over time.
In the end, you could easily have $25k into a NOM small block. It will be a great car to enjoy, but it will only be worth $15k.
Having said all that, why do we care so much about being upside down on these great cars. Many of us would consider buying or even leasing a new car that is a much greater hit than described above. I guess the fact that it's a toy makes it hard to stomach sometimes.
Don't be lured too much by the initial price. If you're going to have to do all the fixes above, look for a $15k example that someone else has put $25k into.
RC81,
Thank you for the offer but my car is now full :D Jim Groden was nice enought to offer his services and I'm going to look at the car this Sat. If the numbers match on the block, tranny & heads and it drives ok I'm going to offer him 10K and see if he will take it. All the above suggestions are good but the also need to be done to the 67 so I really want to get this 70 for a price that I can't loose even if I don't touch it. I would be spending money that I'm hoping I can do without in two years when we plan on moving into a bigger house. If we need the cash in 2 years than I would be forced to sell the 70 and I want to make sure that I could get my money back out of it. It appears that I could sell a #'s matching, high HP small block with the wrong paint for around 13K no problem. If I'm wrong then I will have to let the money sit in the bank earning a stupid 2% and in 2 years the 68-72 vettes will have shot up faster than I sat back and watched the C-2's before I finally deceide to buy
Price sounds pretty good..........buy it but expect to drop quite a bit more into it
:iagree: looks good for the price.....but if your wanting new paint, or at least make the car presentable to shows, etc...then i say you'd have to invest at least another $5000 in it (thats with a reasonable price paint job and doing your own interior work) btw, i say buy it! sell the C2! :D
This is a great time to be doing some bottom fishing. It may sound rotten to say that, but it's times like these that I hope I am financially capable to take advantage of it. Hopefully the '70 vert is what you are looking for. You know about C-2's and what comes about after 30+ years, so I won't toss any more of my thoughts into this parade of what to look for. Whether it is a C-2 or C-3 they all have the same problems if not taken care of.
Give this guy an award for photoghraphy. What a total POS :U I'm not dissapointed because I've been on these chases before. The cars paint appeared to have a bad case of the measles with bumps all over it. The two pictures of the interior where tho only two you could take and not show the fact that it needed to be completly re-done. The drivers door didn't open and the top looked as if it was attacked by a mountain lion. The block was original but that's about all. I'm sure some sucker out there will give him what he wants and if you're stupid and want his number shoot me an email but the pictures are far from the truth. I didn't even start the car as I didn't want to waste my time. Offered him 8k and that's if the numbers matched and he said no so off I went. Steve from the forum was nice enought to go with me (C-3 owner) and he wouldn't pay 6K for the car. Just another mis-represented vette waitting for the unknowing. Maybe one of these days I will get lucky and come across that barn find :D
Too bad to hear that. Maybe you'll be driving down the street one day and you'll find some pizzed-off wife who pulls her hubby's C-3 out and puts a For Sale sign on it for $500.
I'm gonna free up some space on the server that hosts my pix and downsize the ones you sent me. They'll still be in this thread... just a little smaller.
