Crate Motors
I've got $$ burning a hole in my pockets and am wheighing my options. Even thinking about that 350/350...LS1 probably has too much electronics and I've got no CATS...I'm thinking I'd need to hook up an emmissions system on one. But the motor would kick A with the 4-spd...
ps. nice garage
If ZZ's are old tech and way over priced, what are the other options???
There's several optional crates in the small block w/ various HP and options
Matt
The block/cam setup is "newer tech" than the blocks that came in our cars, as they have the nice 1 piece main seal and machined for hydraulic roller lifters. The heads are kinda poopy, but it's a good, reliable motor that makes good power. I like the ZZ4 because it uses hydraulic rollers, hence using the block as the base for my eventual buildup.
The ZZ4 is still based on the first gen small block chevy, LT1/4 is 2nd gen, LS1/6 is 3rd gen.
(The LT1/4 isn't TOO different from our cars, reverse flow and ignition setup being the biggest change... heads/cam still work similarly)

So my "fix it" list and a T56 installed in my C3  Cool! But I still haven't tackled my powerplant issue. I've looked all over for GM crate motors too but found something I really want to do and it's almost in my price range. I saw what 70LS1 did and I knew I had to also. I want an LS1 in my car so badly! MMMMM *salivates* An uncorked, unsmogged LS1 in an older car  Please guys, I do take donations  The thing is, I could buy one even though I was told by my parents to drop the loan price by a few thousand, I just wouldn't have any money left over to pay a shop for the work needed. Yes my friends and I could do all the work ourselves, between the 6 of us we have the knowledge. The problem is getting all 6 of us together one place at a time. My car would be down from now until the end of this year; uhhhh no thanks, I want to drive it, not look at it.
I found a very low mileage (under 10k) 2001 T56 & LS1 combo with everything needed for less than it would cost me to buy both pieces separate. The only downside is that I wouldn't get the warranty of the transmission I'm looking at (see thread here: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=567537 ). Would any of you feel safe in buying a drivetrain combo that had so few miles? The motor is just barely getting broken in by then and I'd feel safe about the mileage but nobody ever really knows about prior owners. If I could get the guy to separate the two parts, I'd go for his low mileage motor, ask him to drop his asking price and buy the T56 with the warranty. I guess I could ask, anybody here want to go in for just a slightly used T56?
My only other option right now is to go for 2 out of 3. It would save me enough money that I could buy all the parts needed to freshen up my car, I'd have a 6 speed manual, but I would get an inexpensive crate motor called an LM1. GM PART # 10067353 It's a shade over a grand in cost from gmpartsdirect.com, would be cheap and reliable (Cheap / Fast / Reliable; pick any 2 outta 3) but it's not exactly what I want. Though it too would have a warranty, as would the T56 and a few parts in my "fix it" list, so that's not bad.
I'm kindof hung up on this warranty stuff right now because if I get into a loan to fix my car, I don't want to turn around in 3 weeks and have to replace a part I just bought. I may as well roll the thing down a cliff with me in it and call it good- start from scratch somewhere else.
Thanks for the assistance. What would you recommend if you had $5500 total in funding and $1300 of it was already spoken for? Some has to be saved for labor cost and another $1400 is pliable in that it could go toward a transmission or an engine-transmission combo.

And forget about warranties. GM's warranty is the best I saw and they still only warranty parts. So if you throw a rod, they'll replace the connecting rod but you'll still have to pay for the new block, piston, rings, head, and other parts that were destroyed and also pay for labor. The warranty is useless!
Also, ask Olivier (GrandSportC3) about his AR engine. He's been running the hell outa his, knocking on 11's door and all for under $3K.

-Okay, so with the GM warranty being crap, now it comes down to the T56. Should I get the one from P.R.T. http://www.phoenixhardparts.com/ or go for the one already mated to the LS1?
My AR 383 is costing me $3500 shipped... The specs are at:
http://corvette.ficker.net/engine_spec.php
Just noticed, the torque is probably a bit low... I only updated the HP, not torque... No big deal, those are just estimates anyhow.
