My AIM states that the system requires 3.2 LB (12 oz) of R-12. However, I can not find any info on how much oil. I had thought I read somewhere that it requires 4 oz. I don't think I have drained any more than 2 oz out of the system so far, there can't be much more than 2 oz in the condenser which will be flushed next week. Does anyone have a source that indicates the required oil charge? Some guy at a gas station said 10 oz, but I think that's way too much.
Just checked my service manual and the '71 takes 11 oz oil. Would think the 75 would be the same as they bothuse the A6 compressor. Best way of getting the oil carge right is to back flush the evap and condensor, replace drier and drain compressor (there's a drain plug on the bottom of the compressor). Then add the specified 11 oz.
That sounds right. I put in 10 oz when I did mine - 2 oz each in the dryer, condensor, evaporator and the rest in the compressor. I also turned my compressor over by hand a bunch to prevent ant damage when I fired it up. It works great now, but I imediately lost the BRAND NEW hi blower relay so I need another one before I get hi-speed back. I'm convinced it was due to the location above the exhaust manifold, and last week it was in the 90's when it started to act up and then quit all together. I've decided to make a jumper harness (not cutting the original wiring ala bubba!) and move the relay next to the low side pipe to the evaporator. This area get nice and frosty when it's on and should keep the relay cool. I may even substitute a Bosch relay for hi-blower. They're way better and can handle the extreme heat.
