Throttle stuck, almost died
... i also had i similar experience in a VW beetle whilst driving round Hyde Park Corner... but that's another story!
i pulled the carb off, rebuilt it, as well, we inspected the throttle cable and the return springs.........
cheap )(*$)(#) floormats
Just happened to me too this evening. Passing a car and gaz pedal almost on the ground, then the car kept accelerating... Pushing on the brake pedal like hell as I didn't realise what happened. Then trying to go back to neutral but for any reason (me stressing I guess), it did make it. brake pedal on the floor... then quick reasoning... what can I do (here in Europe we are used to manual gear, so in this case I would just go to neutral or use the clutch). Anyway I turned the engine off... smoke all around the car...I probably used all the brake pads.
work for my friend mechanic :-)
after stopping and getting my heart rate to approx normal, opening the hood, I realised the throttle was stuck.
How can that happen? Which test can I perform ? Remedies? Two spring on the throttle? Replacing the accelerator cable?
What happens if one turns the engine off while not in neutral? Am I risking the whole transmission system
I better take some pills to go to bed or a whiskey:-)

check your throttle cable and linkages to see what is binding. Could be the carb needs a good clean. If not used for a while, can get a "gunky" film on the moving components.
obviously check the spring returns and verify the throttle transitions without any stickiness.
I had a similar issue (throttle stuck full) during a track day. Could not work out what caused the issue until viewing in car video footage. Looking though the rear opening of my L88 style bonnet I saw my engine jumping up about 2" everytime I floored the gas pedal. Then I realised my engine mount was broken. 😨
