I just installed a rebuilt seering gearbox and control valve on my 79. now it feels like I have no power steering at all. I jacked the car up and spun the wheel free of weight and still very stiff. Is it an over tourque from the rebuilder or maybe the control valve is not doing it's job. the pump seemed fine before the replacement. Whats Up?
You might have received the gear box I returned for the same reason. I tried rebuilt units from 2 different builders and they were both felt too tight. When bench tested them using a torque wrench setting were significantly higher than gm specs. I decided to just reset mine to gm factory torque settings and had great results in doing so. I returned the two I ordered to the rebuilder.
I got mine from a reputable local corvette shop, does you wheel return to center after a turn ? mine doesn't
I got mine form VB&P and it was loose. It's easy to adjust, though. Loosen the top locknut and turn the screw CW to tighten, CCW to loosen. I slowly tightened mine until I could just feel resistence turning the input shaft (have to go lock-to-lock during this), and then backed it off 1/8 turn. It has worked great for 4 years now.
