I have a hot start problem on my 70 big block vette. It seems to have gotten worse over the last year. I recently replaced my starter with a high performance starter that is supposed to be resistant to heat issues but the problem still persists. I also replaced the battery (glad I kept that Die Hard receipt from two years ago) and it has a new alternator. Usually will not start again after running for 10 minutes or so. The battery tests at around 13v when it exhibits the hot start problem and it will start if I jump start ith with the battery charger. Am I missing something?
I have the same problem.
I had a hot start problem when I switched to Headers. Car would not turn over. Nada. Wouldnt make a sound when I turned the Key.
I added a heat shield to the GM starter....didnt work. Still nothing.
Pulled original starter and went with a Mini high torque Powermaster. I even added a remote solenoid just to make sure.
Car started fine when cold, but when hot the starter would screech like hell on the flywheel.
Called powermaster, they told me to change the wiring a bit. No help. They figured the Starter was bad, they had me send it back.
In the meantime I put the old starter back in so I could cruise around. I also hooked up the remote solenoid. I figured I'd be ok since I've heard that a remote solenoid fixes hot start problems. WRONG Now the original starter grinds when the engine is hot. Now I figure it has something to do with the remote solenoid. :mad :mad
CAn anyone help!
I am about ready to torch this friggin car!
Can this be due to a bad battery? Too thin a batt cable from remote solenoid to starter? Using 4 guage.
WTF :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad
I dont know Brett.
As I said, the old starter worked fine but would get heat soak and wouldnt make a sound when hot. It literally would do nothing.
Added a remote solenoid, starts fine cold but screeches like hell when hot. The mini starter had the same symptoms, exactly. Thats why I think its the remote solenoid or wiring.
Hot start is caused by the spring in the starter solenoid. Chevy makes a optional Plunger Return Spring Part #1958679, cost $2.25. Buy it from your local Chevrolet Parts Dept. Replace it with the spring in your solenoid. I have had one in my solenoid for about 5 years. No hot start problem. Today the outside temperature was over 95. I drove around town and made at least 6 stops, also drove 45 miles on freeway. Car started everytime. I have a warmed over 350 with headers. :chevy
