Paging Lars = Can it be saved Captain?
I have an 80 L-82 Auto with a test pipe, DynoMax mufflers and all of the emission stuff removed (EGR, air pumps air injection pipes etc.). I have the stock carb on it #17080228. My question is can these emission carbs be worked to get more out of them or is it best to try a Holley, Edelbrock or ? The car starts and runs ok. Bogs a little on the take-off but it runs way rich. Just standing next to it coats you in an exhaust smell. Driving is even worse. Help!
Joe

There's nothing wrong with the 1980 Q-Jet - it flows 750 cfm jst like all the other Q-Jets, and it will produce a very nice level of performance if properly jetted and set up. I usually recommend a good precision rebuild with a new float, new filter and a new choke pulloff. Verify the carb is jetted to spec, and set the float level at .420". Adjust secondary windup to 3/4 turn, and set the idle mix screws to 4 turns out from fully seated. Also make sure your power piston is correctly adjusted so you get proper mixture control at cruise/idle (top part of the metal portion of the piston should be flush with the top ridge of the plastic retainer when the piston is fully depressed). This will give you a very good baseline to start your tuning from, and it should give you a pretty crisp level of performance. If your exhaust flows pretty good, you can bump the main jet size up 2 sizes from stock. Once set up, there is nothing at all wrong with the '80 Q-Jet.
