I am in the process of installing a fuel injection system on my 502. In order to get sequential injection, I have to change out to a dual sync distributor. I'm tired of chasing parts to keep the mechanical drive original tach so I was wondering whatelse I would need to put a '75 or '76 electronic tach in my dash.
Re: Tachometer.... mechanical to electronic? (Rolling Thunder)
Yes, Roger is a good source, or you could go get a stock tach from 75-77, and it would work...assuming it's good that is....need that infamous tach filter also, but you can make one....
Re: Tachometer.... mechanical to electronic? (Todbo)
there's a company in Jackson , tn (clock's by roger) that will convert your tach to electronic
Todd
Any idea what they charge? I know a good 75-76 tach will usually go for about $125 or so, just wondering if having one converted over is less expensive?
I was informed that the following are OER parts numbers for replacement corvette tachometers. I haven't been able to confirm this since the oerparts.com website doesn't have any info which I can access.
If someone can verify/confirm these it would probably be valuable to those C3 folks who wish to install an electronic tach.
Re: Tachometer.... mechanical to electronic? (Rolling Thunder)
I did exactly what Zwede did - installed a '76 with my old faceplate. However, I had a problem because I have an MSD-6a ingnition. If you use an MSD box, DO NOT simply connect their "Tach" terminal to your GM electronic tach. MSD makes an adapter that you have to use. It's on their website. Turns out I blew the brains out of the tach circuit board and had to replace it. Works fine now (with the MSD adapter).

That's odd. I did the same thing and it works fine??? I did build my own tach filter, though. Maybe that saved it?

Zwede,
Would you be interested in building one of these electric tachs for me for a price?
Bob
Well, it's so simple I'd feel wrong to charge for it. It's just a resistor and a capacitor. You can get the parts from radioshack for about $1. I think I ended up using a 10k Ohm resistor and a 10uF cap.

Ignore dots. Just there to avoid the forum messing up the formatting.
Edit: I'm assuming you were referring to the tach filter, not electric tachs?
Re: Tachometer.... mechanical to electronic? (zwede)
Sounds like you might have a business opportunity here Zwede. I talked to Gary G. on the phone today and he questioned the tach face change. When I told him you had done it, he said, "If Markus says it'll work, it'll work!" Then he laughed and hinted that I might ought to get it and send it to you to have it changed. I took that to either be a compliment to you or a lack of confidence in my ability. On further consideration I decided it was both.
Re: Tachometer.... mechanical to electronic? (Rolling Thunder)
Garys a good guy. He was complaining about having to find a running car to test the used tachs so I built him a tach tester box. Traded it to him for some parts.
As for the face plate change, the only issue I had was that the 71 faceplate used tiny rivets, and the 75-77 was screw on. The holes almost, but not quite, line up between the two. I had to elongate the faceplate holes to make it fit. Once installed in the car you can't tell.
