Has anybody done an AC conversion from R12 to 134a?
I have a 78 silver anniversary and the AC doesn't work. I don't want to pay 35 or 40 bucks a pound for R12.
What about the 35.00 kits Wal Mart carries?????
You can covert your system to 134-a, but I have not heard any good things about the cheap conversion kits.
In order to do the conversion correctly you need to clean all of the old mineral oil out of the system by flushing it, then you will need to replace the receiver drier and re-fill the system with the appropriate amount of Ester oil.
No! No!... do not flush... The flushing fluid used today does not evaporate and you cannot get all of the flush fluid out.. That's as bad as just leaving the old oil in.. Replace the receiver/Accumulator, drain all of the oil out of the compressor. Use a kit with ester oil and make sure you vacuum thesystem to around 28"hg.. When you service with R134a you need to get 26-28 psi on the low side at 2000 engine rpm. The biggest problem with R134a is over servicing. Done right.. the conversion is just as good as R12....There are about 40 thousand posts on this. Search the archives. check out http://www.corvettefaq.com

In the total cost of getting the A/C to working the cost of the refregrent, even R12, can be just a very small percentage of the cost. All depends upon what is wrong with the system.
