Default '72 Exhaust Suggestions

Hey all,

I am looking to upgrade the exhaust system on my '72. The previous owner had put on the stock style mufflers and its too quiet for my liking. I do already have Flowtech Block Hugger Headers but what would you suggest for the rest of the way back from the headers to produce a deep commanding tone? I want to get a deeper tone from the exhaust. Someone told me to look in to purchasing a set of glass pack mufflers, but I wanted to see what you all had to offer for suggestions.

What should I look into? Where can I find them? Any recommendations?

Tom, the only advice I can give you is, stay away from chambered pipes. Some forum brothers like them and I respect there opinions! But they are just too loud and rob HP. Thad

I tried looking up Flomaster 40 series, but they do not fit the '72. I have seen lots of ads in ecklers and mid america for Dynomax systems. I am just looking to replace the mufflers with something louder.

Any suggestions?

How about a nice 427-454 engine? Beer can valves always make nicer sounds than dime sized ones :lol: :lol: :lol:

I was wondering the same thing. I don't have headers and there is some resonance, but I don't really think it's too loud. I'm waiting until they get "Burned In" before I make a final desision on the resonance. I may consider trying an "H" pipe if they don't mellow sufficiently.

Yep.... that sounds like a cheap solution! And just kidding of course. There is definitely a different sound though.

Seriously though, all kidding aside, I would like a serious recommendation for muffler configurations on a '72 350. :thumbs:

I want a much deeper tone than the stock mufflers on there.

I have 2 1/2 inch pipes going back to Borlas. It is not quiet and not loud; sorta a mid-range tone.

Soon will be going to side pipes! :)

2 1/2" and Dynomax Super Turbos from Ecklers, Mid America. Is what I have, I like the sound bo too much, but louder than stock.

Flowmaster can be fitted by a good muffler shop, have them on my 73 and like em. They do produce a dronning sound at about 3500 rpm's but a crossover pipe helps eliminate that. Serious 50 are a little quieter. I have heard the ultra flows on forum member gdh's 72 and they sound great too.

The chambered mufflers rob power because of their design, they are a section of pipe with a bunch of dimples in them that dissrupts air flow, but do sound :cool: , loud but :cool: .

Okay...I'm an old fart and we either installed Cherry Bombs or Smittys.
Whatta I know about Flow this and Chambered that? :D
If you want performance you take OFF the mufflers and run straight out the headers. If you want noise you put on BOMBS or header mufflers. It was a simpler day back then :)

I put the factory LT1 reproduction 2 1/2" aluminized pipes and Magnaflow mufflers on my '72, 350, Sounds great, gives it that muscle car era sound!! I bought the whole setup from Corvette Central. Bolted up perfectly, from the manifold all the way back to the exhaust tips!!

I have Delta Flow 50s on mine. They are bigger than the 40s and they fit fine. I had a custom system put on but the sound is great. Loud enough when you are on it but quiet enough not to call every cop for miles around. I also have an H pipe

Got the Dynomax Super Turbos on my 72 now, and it sounds good to me!

72 350 TH400, and a few bolt ons added:D

Whats the best place to look to get Dynomax Ultra Flo or Super Turbo mufflers that will fit without modifications on a '72?

Tom, Gordonm and myself have the same custom 2 1/2" exhaust on our vettes. He has a 72 and I have a 73, the delta 50 series fit fine. You just need a good muffler shop to do the work for you.
