Can't say enough good things about Alpine. To spend $300 for a poorely designed 80's cassete player just to save a $50 console plate escapes me. Console plates are available through hundreds of vendors. Just get what you want based on sound not how it fits in. the professionals will be careful not to hack up your Baby and you'll be presently surprised.
Uh, I have had two of them and liked them both. Are you guys using factory speakers or something? Are you buying 20 watt models and bitching that they don't sound like 100 watt models? Granted, I am into heavy metal, but they sound find to me. Add a powered subwoofer and you can get some pretty decent (and loud) sounds for around $400-$500. Is it gona keep up with someone running dual 15" subs and 1000 watt amps. Duh, no, but I like my music loud and its plenty for me. I honestly don't know why people are so upset here about them. We currently own 7 cars of which we have replaced/upgraded the systems in five of them. The auto sound may not be the best, but I didn't pay $500 for the head either.
PS they are available with remote CD. I still use cassettes and enjoy the fact that I can listen to either on.
I bought one,and have had three other cars that had them in when I bought the cars. All four were worse that the stock radio. VERY poor sound quality and terrible reception. A $20 portable laying in the passenger seat would be better .
I bought a CAR AM/FM cassette deck for my 69. The fast forward button moves the tape in the same direction regardless of which side of the tape is playing! I upgraded all speakers and installed the unit myself. Considering how loud my car is at speed, I find sound quality acceptable.

Tom
When they do the conversion they install a CD jack in the rear of the radio. The sound is outstanding. The radio reception is 5 times better than stock.
Not only is their product a POS, their service sucks also. I sent the first one I bought back to them thru my dealer because it failed. They told him it failed because it got wet & refused to credit it. I promise you it never saw a drop of water. Dealer said this was typical of them & replaced it with another one out of his pocket. I have been riunning this one for two years without any problems, although the sound is awful. It's not the speakers as I replaced the originals with a nice set of Polks. :mad :cuss
