I realized this past weekend that third-gen f-body rims have the same bolt circle and hub. I have set of factory 15" Z-28 wheels I tried for laughs- they wouldn't clear the brake caliper. But a 15" firebird rim did. (Had more of a "dish" to the offset. I'm wondering if anyone knows if 16" Z-28 rims would fit, as a cheap alternative to get her into some 16's. Figured the "Chevrolet Motor Division" centers on those wouldn't look too bad either.
I've seen it done, but if I remember correctly, the offset is different and will also require the spacers. I do know that some of the Z-28's had wider rims on the back than the front, so that may be an issue.
I have seen 16" IROC-Z rims on a C3, I don't know if spacers were required. I have a set on my 67 firebird. The wheels are 16x8 and the front rims have 4.5" of backspacing and the rears have 4 7/8" backspacing. In my case I had to put the fronts on the rear and the rears on the front to get them to fit. Because the wheels are stamped "front" and "rear" if I forget to tell a tire shop or mechanic they often put the wheels on my car backwards and the tires rub.
:iagree: they look about as good as they do on 84-87 vettes :nonod:
and as sad as it is, i still have them on my 86 :U but my new rims should be arriving next week, so they'll just be for use at the track from then on
That's one heck of a coincidence. My new wheels for my '86 should be here on Monday. Also, like you, I have an '81 and an '86 vette in the garage. Been wanting to mention that everytime I see you post and see that you have both too! :)
I'd like to thank everybody for their input. There's a guy at the shore I deal with who specializes in f-body stuff. (I use him for TPI stuff mainly) I'll see if I can "borrow" some rims from his inventory with option to buy if I can make something work. Call me old fashioned, but I like the look of those Western mags from the 70's, especially with some spinners. Now if they came in 16".......
