It is supposed to mean that every original numbered part on the car is correct for the build date of the car. Usually it means that it has the original engine and transmission.
It is something that is very important for people who are interested in NCRS competition, since every major part has either a date code or partial VIN number stamped on it. Alternator, starter, waterpump, carburetor, PS pump and so on.
It is also supposed to give the impression that the car is unmolested and unbubba-fied.
Good luck in your search for a nice clean C-3.
What Smokehouse said. Be very, very suspicious of a "matching numbers" claim from a seller. The difference between the value of car with nothing but the engine and transmission having correct numbers and a car with all parts with correct number can be several thousands of dollars. Best idea if you care about matching numbers is to take a vette guy (or gal) with you & a good copy of the NCRS judging manual. If you don't care about it, ignore the matching #s business and buy the car you like.
Matching numbers mean many things to many people. In its purest sense it means the car has all its original parts. Some people consider it to refer to the drive train(engine, trans, rear end). Some people have no idea and just say they have a numbers matching car just to bring up the price of their car.
If you want a car to show or collect buy a numbers matching car they are more valuable for these venues.
You're in the same boat I was about 18 months ago. I was just starting to research C3s ad nauseum. I would honestly suggest that your first C3 be a non-matching #s car...if for no other reason than you really DO have to have someone very well educated to help you pick out a REAL matching #s car.
I wasn't confident in that, plus I like to modify stuff. So I found a very nice car and didn't worry about matching #s. It's faster and handles better than the original anyway which is all I care about. :D
Be weary of seller's commnents such as when matching numbers...casting #'s match. Casting numbers narrow it down to a 350 built between 69-86. Match the VIN in the left windshield piller post to the front right plate just forward of the right cylinder head and outbound of where the water pump is.
