How hard is it to replace body mounts? :eek
Soooo, how hard is it to replace the body mounts and "try" to get the body where it belongs?
Thanks!
Remove the kick panels and look at the condition of the number two body mounts. Remove the inspection panel and look at the condition of the number three body mount.
If you are going to remove the body mount bolts be sure to spray them with PB Blaster for a few days prior to your attempt.
Search the archives, there are several threads on body mount replacement. I ended up lifting the body to do mine as I had a bolt that I couldn't remove on the #3 passenger's side position.
Could be easy/could be a PITA. All the parts are available if you need to do welding type repairs to the frame or birdcage. There is a section in the GM Shop manual on replacing body mounts, that would be a good place to start.
I was having a hard time describing the rubber mount, it just looks like the standard dry-rot "pushed out" old rubber bushing type.
I have inspected the frame and there is no major rust anywhere I can find. There is even very little surface rust.
The car was painted in 2002 and all the bodylines match well, and no major fiberglass problems were found (there had been some repairs however).
Where is the inspection panel?
I will search the archives, thanks again for your help. I was worried it would be a horrendous task.
The inspection panel for the #3 body mount is in the forward part of the rear wheel well. Four screws hold the plate on.
My frame also does not have any rust, but the #4 (rear most) frame attachment points for the body mounts were worn thin. You couldn't really tell until the old rubber mounts were removed and the frame could be inspected.
The GM Shop Manual is a good source of information.
In the process of redoing mine right now on a 76. My #4 mount reinforcement plates were rotted. Doing one side at a time. Be sure and loosen or remove all mounting bolts first. I had to remove the rear bumper also. All and all everything went pretty good. Definetly soak everything down with PB Blaster.
