I have 1 power steering leak and it is at the pump around the new pressure hose. I don't feel like tackling a pump re-build and was thinking of stopping by AutoZone today after work and buying one of their re-build pumps. I just checked and they have them for $48 with "Atsco" reservoir or $45 with out the reservoir. Wonder which one I need? Anybody have any experience with their power steering pumps? Thanks
Good point Tom! Before installing Zips rebuild kit this was the one area I didn't have a leak. I may have loosened it when I removed the old line. I'll put a wrench on it tonight. Thanks
I have had my AutoZone rebuilt PS pump with reservoir on for about 2 years now and I have not had any trouble with it at all. No leaks or squeals at all.
If you have not done this before you will need a special puller to get the pulley off the old pump and back on the new pump. I borrowed one from a mechanic buddy.
Whatever you do, don't buy a new pump from Pep Boys... I worked there as a mechanic for about 5 months, and I've never gotten so many defective parts in my life.

Yeah - the few parts I have bought from them have sucked. I only buy small stuff, made by other compaines, from their store.
In 1980 the pump connection on all GM vehicles changed from a 45 degree flare fitting to a metric o-ring connection. Make sure that you aren't trying to install a 45 degree flare hose (your original hose) into a metric pump fitting. If you have a 45 degree flare hose, you should look into the pump discharge fitting and see a brass 45 degree seat inside the fitting. No brass seat? You most likely have a 1980 or newer metric pump.
Thanks everybody for the info and ideas. Jim Shea I was reading the many papers you have on the subject at corvette FAQ, I'm impressed. Jim if you told me to run out to the parking lot and spit in the pump.......I'd do it. Thank you for the personnal response, I'm hopeing it's just a lose fitting on the back of the pump common to the pressure hose. It's not a metric fitting by the way. Thanks guys!
