Ok this may be a really stupid question but I can't seem to find a piston ring set for my application. Here is what my question is. I am building a 454 street motor. I have already ordered a set of speed pro hypereuetic pistons that will yeild 10.5:1 with my heads. Could you please recommend a piston ring set ? My pistons are + .030 giving me a bore size of 4.280. This is mainly a weekend street car. Would like a good molly style that want blow my budget.
When I look at the ring sets in the catalogs I see the more expensive rings referring to my bore size which is 4.280. But when I look at the rings they don't list my bore size and that is confusing me. Example, Speed Pro file fit molly ring is listed for 4.280 and costs $85 a set. where as Childs and Albert dura molly rings list a 4.155 and then jumps to a 4.310  I would think that a .030 454 would be very common.
I have always had fantastic luck with Speed Pro rings. They just always flat work. Some folks have success with the zero gap style, but I think they work best in specific applications. Many folks have issues with them. Not worth the trouble to me to experiment.
I don't see NASCAR, OEM or professional drag racers using them, so I'll just stay with what works.
Plain cast ironn sets are cheaper and work fine in a old cylinder bore that isn't perfect. If you're going to the trouble of boring and new pistons.don't scrimp on the rings.
Pay close attention to ring gaps on the Hypereutectic pistons. Often they require wider gaps to keep from butting with the higher piton crown temps.
The rings you need are very common. Just call Jegs or Summit. They just don't have everything listed in catalogs.
Thanks for the info Jim. Do you recommend the file fits or find a set that are pre gapped? If I go with the file fit do I have to buy a special tool to cut them?
