Default Engine rebuild......

Hello,

I am looking into some options for my engine.
First I was planning on getting a new ZZ4 engine to put in my 75er but from what I hear I would be better of rebuiling my current engine.

an some of you engine builders help me on what I should get to make a good engine ?
I am looking for 400 - 440 Hp.

The engine that is in it is a stock 350 .

Here is what I was thinking of myself ( But I am a newbie at this so..)

A complete kit crank and pistons ( http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...tart&catid=450 )

A Hot cam kit
And GM fast burn aluminum heads.

Please give me your advice on this since I don't know anything about it..

Thanks

What will the car be used for? Are you more interested in low end torque or high RPM horsepower? What gears are you running? Transmission type?
The hot cam(the option for a zz4) will not work on your current engine because it is a roller cam. It is possible to convert to a roller cam setup but it is very costly. The fact that the zz4 for is already setup for a roller cam is one of its best features.
Are you going to farm out the work(engine assembly) or do it yourself?
This info should help us recommend something for you.

Well I will drive usualy during weekends, I want an engine that will get my corvette to accelerate it it should :-))

I am planning on getting a 200R4 trans, for gears I havent made up my mind about this...

I have a friend who has a garage and would put the engine together.

I read an article about an interesting engine but I don't know if this is a good configuration.

I am taking an engine rebuilding course right now at a local college and I am lovin it. My advice to anybody who has a similar course available to them is to TAKE THE COURSE!

The rule we follow when selecting replacement parts for our engines is to decide what RPM we plan on running the engine at. Street engines, the instructor says, will rarely see higher than 4500 RPM. He goes on to say that the higher your power band the more your street driveability will suffer. Also, the higher your engine revs the faster your engine will wear out (naturally the instructor wants the engines built in his class to last as long as possible).

Just something to think about.

My brother has a '75 and about a month ago his 17-yr. old failed to stop the car when it overheated and spun two rod bearings. Brother, being mechanically challenged, and otherwise challenged for letting the kid drive the car, had me over to help pull the engine and assess the damage. I, mechanically able, but a Corvette infant, was shocked when I pulled the oil pan off and discovered two-bolt mains. It is the stock engine as identified by the VIN stamped on the block. Brother wants 300 HP and we had a shop rebuild the engine with a mild cam, a slight dome piston, stock rebuilt heads, performer manifold and carb, and dual exhaust. Engine is not in the car yet, but I think it may have about 250-275 HP. A lot better than the anemic 165 stock. Moral of the story. If you have a '75 L-82 and want 400 plus HP, buy a built crate motor or find a good four-bolt main block to start. 400 HP with a two-bolt is pushing things. Of course, this is just my opinion. I assume the L-88's were four-bolt mains, so if that is what you have, you have a good block for a 400 HP build. I would suggest a 383 kit from a reputable supplier, 64cc heads (Vortecs are great) and high performance intake, carb and headers/dual exhaust.

OK thanks for the replies so from what I hear from you is that I should get a complete new engine...

What do you think if I would walk the path like they did here http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/81998/index.html

Does this look like a good engine ?

Thanks.
( or would it be better to spend another couple of thousand $ more and get a ZZ4)

I bough a balanced rotating assembly from SDPC earlier this year and waited and waited and waited and waited. Maybe I just got a bad customer rep but from now on, I'm sticking with Summit or Jeg's.
