Are there any plates I could get that would allow me to skip emmsions, ive heard of other states where you can get antique plates and it lets you skip emmisons as long as your car is over 25 years old, is this an option available in Illinois?

You can get antique plates which will exempt you from emission testing. Technically, they will also exempt you from driving the car except for repairs and car shows or club events. I opted for normal plates and have to be tested, but I don't want to get nailed for driving when I'm not supposed to. Most cops won't nail you on this, but I've heard the State Police will and I'm not sure what might happen if you get into an accident. :banghead: Another thing you can do is register the car to a relative or friend outside of the metro Chicago area, they do not get tested.

I have antique plates on my '72. Normally police don't mess with you unless you use it as a daily driver and they spot it every day. Mine isn't driven on the street at all any more so it's not really a big worry for me.
Environment plates contribute cash to politician's pockets and you get a pretty little birdy on the plate. Don't waste your money. Another good thing with antique plates is they don't expire every year. I think they are good for 4 or 5 years.

With Antique plates in IL you can skip emissions. The onyl catch is that the car is only supposed to be used for shows or going for serivce or club events.
you will be OK if you only casually drive; I don't know if I would put them on an everyday driver. FYI-I have a '78, and they only test to the standards in place for that release year. In the case of mine, they onyl stuck the test pipe up the exhaust; no dyno. the early standards are pretty easy to pass. A couple folks in our club don't even have a cat, and passed.

Another way of getting around emissions is getting a PO Box in an area that doesn't require emissions. I don't know how long it will be before the state picks up on the but I know some people that do it now. I currently register mine the normal way, but I have yet to do the emissions testing on it. Just bought it this summer.

The best way is to register the car with an address that doesn't require emmissions testing. I'm still considering the antique plates in a few years but I don't want to run into troubles. The good thing is that during the summer there's a cruise night almost every night of the week. If you get stopped you might tell the officer you're heading to the cruise night. :auto:

With antique plates, you also get a break on insurance. But get into an accident driving to work without proof of the required "show, repairs, club event" restriction. That will give the insurance company an excuse NOT to pay out!!!!

I've had some experiance with not passing IL emissions with an early '74 MGB (last one w/chrome bumpers and no cat' conv') ... wouldn't pass even though I had a mechanic friend test it on his own garage exh' analyzer and leaned out the carbs! Ended up selling the car to a guy in FL where the car had originally come from. My' 74 'vert came from WI (purchased this past spring) and did pass up there so we'll see what IL will do. It's true that they base your emissions on whatever the year required. I've been also told that you may be able to get a waiver if it still has all of the emissions equip' intact and STILL doesn't pass but have yet to hear that anyone gets these. Here in the NW 'burbs of Chicago I see a lot of the off-white antique plates on muscle cars that are definitely driven all summer every day. You also do have to sign an affidavit stating that the car will NOT be used other than for shows, etc. when you apply for the antique plates so you would not what to lie would you??? :blueangel:

There's always a show somewhere and these old cars are always in need of maintenance. I'm either out looking for a show or making sure mine's running right, both of which allow me to qualify for antique plates.

Big advantage on antique plates- they are good for five years. Next expiration is 12/04 when we'll see the updated ones like we saw with our daily driver plates. Those'll be good until 12/09 :yesnod:
