I have been experiencing a problem with starting the engine after it is warm. After it sits for a short period after I turn it off the engine seems to crank for an longer period of time before it starts. Usually when it has to crank like that there will be some blue smoke when it starts. There is no problem when the engine is cold. I pump the gas one time and it fires right up. I replaced the Q-Jet with the Holly 650 Q-Jet replacement carb. Is this starting problem a carb problem or could my timing be off? I would really appreciate any help you all can provide on this one.

Re: Help Starting Problems (Ron 75 L48)
Sounds like your choke is to blame Ron. What kind are you running? Electric, integral or divorced choke? Each one needs a different source. Or could be your idle mixture adjustment. Holley uses modular sections and this makes it easer to troubleshoot. It’s hard to see it from here in California. But your carb sounds like the 4175 speadbore that I’m planning on using. I just got tired of Quadra-problem carbs. Holley seems much simpler with plenty of good “how to” books and parts.
Blue smoke is burning oil and I suspect the valve seals for this. It should smoke like that after cold start-up too. If black smoke we’re talking fuel now and its flooding from the pump shot you give it.
The stock Chevy O-rings are pretty lame and a set of umbrella valve seals should be the fix. Seals are only $15 but several hours of labor to install.
BTW any problems hooking up your spreedbore? Throttle linkage? Vacuum lines? Will I need any special parts for mine? :seeya
Thanks for the responses. It is the 4175 that I have. It is a direct replacement for the Q-jet and everything is pretty straight forward to swapping out the carbs. No special tools or parts.
